Iceland Day 2 – Golden Circle Part 2

Our tour along the gold circle continued on after the visit to the geysers to the Gullfoss Waterfall.  After we disembarked the bus we had a short walk to a set of steps that take you down to the waterfall.  Once you get to the steps and look down the massive and impressive waterfall comes into view.  The waterfall is located in the Hvítá river which is fed by the second largest glacier in Iceland – Langjökull.  The water plummets 104 feet into a canyon.  The canyon walls are 230 feet high.  We were lucky to have such a beautiful sunny cloudless day for our visit that we were rewarded with a rainbow that was created from the mist off the powerful waterfall.  

After you descend the steps your first viewing point is directly watching the waterfall head on.  You can walk down the path that leads to the second viewing point where the falls begin.  When you are standing where the water rushes into the canyon is it impressive to hear and feel the power.

The third viewing point is up the steps and above the falls.  It is a truly impressive visit and a must go if you get the chance!

The last stop on our tour was Þingvellir National Park.  The national park lies in the rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic ridge and the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.  The journey that we took on our walk took us from the Eurasian tectonic plate to the North American tectonic plate.  It is a beautiful walk in the rift from on plate to the next surrounded by natural rock formations.
