February 2026

I am trying to keep up with my reading for 1 hour per day. This month I tried to be conscious of taking a lunch and taking that half hour to read. I am finding that after a full day of work and home responsibilities, my eyes get heavy while reading at night. In the beginning of the month I was a bit more successful in actually taking a lunch break and reading for a half hour and finishing a book, but responsibilities got in the way. I was only able to finish two books this month, so it didn’t feel like a successful reading month. Looking back, I was still successful in making reading a priority so that is a win.

The Heir Apparent – Rebecca Armitage

The first book I finished this month I started in January in inspired by the Royal family – an aging queen with a male first born heir apparent waiting for his time to reign. Her son is divorced from his first wife that he had 2 children who died tragically. While married he had years long affair with is true love who he eventually marries. The king in waiting and his son are on a skiing holiday and die in an avalanche and the royal line is now passed to his second born – the daughter who has distanced herself from the family/institution for the last decade. Lexi is happy living her life and working to become a doctor in Tasmania. Now she is pulled back into the family. Lexi makes a deal with her grandmother the queen – become a working royal again for one year. After that one year, make a decision – accept the title of heir apparent or the life she has built in Tasmania. The book follows Lexi during the year, flashes back to her childhood, mother’s death, and her broken relationship with her father and brother. This story drew me in immediately and was a quick read.

Just the Nicest Couple – Mary Kubica

Two couples, where the wives are good friends, and one missing husband. This book follows Nina dealing with her husband not returning home after a fight, Lily her friend and co-worker and her husband Christian. How does Jake being missing affect all their lives? Should we be suspicious that Lily and Christian have something to do with why Jake is missing? Is someone stalking Lily and Christian?

When the book started with quick action I thought I would fly through this book, but it slowed a bit for me and felt like it was dragging at times.

The characters have chemistry and it draws you in and root for them to succeed through all of the outside pressure.
